Reality check: When the power grid goes down, all grid-tie solar systems will go down with it

by Mike Adams, the Health Ranger, NaturalNews Editor

(NaturalNews) A lot of people believe they are becoming “power independent” by installing grid-tie solar systems, but what many don’t realize is that virtually all such systems are designed to actively go offline when the power grid goes offline.
A “grid-tie” solar system is one that ties into the power grid, pulling electricity from the grid when needed, then pushing excess electricity back into the grid when the local customer isn’t using the full capacity being generated by PV panels (photovoltaic). As long as the grid stays up, it’s a clever solution because it reduces or even eliminates the customer’s electric bills while generating “clean” energy.
Because of the very fact that these systems are tied into the power grid, however, they all have a safety feature that disconnects them from the grid when the grid goes down. In other words, if the power grid goes offline, your entire grid-tie solar array becomes instantly useless and you can’t power a laptop computer even if you have $100,000 worth of solar panels sitting on your roof. In a grid-tie system, they all are instantly shut off.
Let me be clear, because some people reading this article seem to vastly misunderstand the issue: When the power grid goes down, your entire PV array is instantly disabled by your grid-tie inverters, and you cannot use your PV array for anything! Even if the sun is shining, you will have no power from it, period. Understand?
Some early comments to this story suggested that people could simply install a throw switch that would divert the PV array to local use only. This is NOT allowed by local electrical code! Such a system is very difficult to engineer in a safe manner and would almost certainly violate local codes in nearly all U.S. cities. It simply will NOT pass inspection and will not be allowed in most areas. I spoke with top solar consultants to confirm this. At best, such a system would exist in a “grey area” of regulatory approval, I was told.
Again, most people reading this story still do not understand what I’m saying here, and I’ve backed this up with conversations with top solar experts and equipment providers around the world. When the power grid goes down, virtually all grid-tie systems go down with it. Your solar panels are instantly rendered uselessand cannot be used until the city power grid is restored.

It’s a “safety” feature

Four out of five people reading this will not believe this information because it is so counter-intuitive. I spoke with architects and engineers who didn’t even know this information. They were all proven wrong. If you install a grid-tie solar system, the entire system is immediately useless when the grid goes down. You will have zero power, even if the sun is shining. Your solar array only functions when grid power is up, get it? That’s the way grid-tie systems are hard-wired. There is no BYPASS function. Grid down = solar array down, period.
What’s the reason behind all this? Because if the main power grid is down, the assumption is that a power line worker may be working on the line somewhere. If a local solar customer is feeding electricity back up the line, that can be dangerous — even deadly — to a power line worker. Thus, all grid-tie solar equipment sold today includes the “safety feature” of automatically shutting down when the grid goes down.
Or at least that’s the official explanation from the solar power companies, because there’s no explanation as to why these inverters have to shut off the localsupply of power from the PV panels. Why not let the homeowner continue to have electricity from their own solar panels even if the power grid is down?

Off-grid systems

“Off-grid” systems allow precisely that. These systems, which do not tie into the power grid, run on a combination of solar panels, batteries and often a backup generator running on gasoline, diesel or propane.
Off-grid systems are ridiculously expensive to own and operate, mostly due to the cost of batteries. Today’s battery technology remains stuck in the 1800’s, meaning that even so-called “deep cycle” batteries will still last only 5 – 10 years. If you do the math on the cost of batteries for a typical off-grid system running a household of four people, you’ll come to the surprising figure that batteries alone can cost you $500 / month, each and every month that you use an off-grid system (that’s the total cost of the batteries divided by the number of months they will last).
That’s why most people don’t go with off-grid systems. Grid-tie systems cost significantly less, especially with solar panels now at rock-bottom prices thanks to China dumping them onto the U.S. market below manufacturing cost. (Right now is a great time to buy solar panels, before new tariffs kick in.)
Batteries can be eliminated in such a system by having a standby generator. The solution I personally recommend, as I have researched this in considerable detail, is to purchase a 20kw Generac generator and acquire a 1,000-gallon propane tank to power it. If you practice some simple energy conservation techniques (such as limiting use of air conditioners or heaters), you can run a typical household for 2-3 months on 1,000 gallons of propane. And if you have solar panels to help along the way, that could be stretched to 4-6 months since you’d only be using the propane fuel at night or when the sun isn’t shining.
Only an off-grid system gives you true energy independence.

Many people who buy grid-tie systems mistakenly think they’re buying off-grid systems

The kicker in all this is that many people mistakenly think they’re buying one kind of system when, in reality, they’re buying the other kind. Solar installation companies that install grid-tie systems do not necessarily inform their customers that their systems will not function when the power grid goes down. So these customers, even after spending $20,000 to $80,000 or even more, end up with a system that’s 100% dependent on the power grid!
There’s going to be a rude awakening for these people when the power grid goes down and their solar systems refuse to function. Because, for most people installing solar systems today, the whole idea is to have power when the grid goes down.
And how likely is the grid to go down? Cyber security expert David Chalk says there is a “100 percent chance” that the grid will go down in the near future due to vulnerabilities to cyber terrorism. I recently interviewed him about this subject, and you can watch that interview at: http://tv.naturalnews.com/v.asp?v=81D036C326E439BFA82D0592925918C2
When I asked him how many months or year it might be before we suffer a catastrophic infrastructure failure of some kind, his reply was, “It’s more like a matter of days.”
His website is www.DavidChalkInc.com

Off-grid solar equipment is in short supply

As you probably suspected, the kind of solar equipment used to build off-grid systems — the kind that function without the power grid — is in very short supply. Manufacturers in Germany, Japan and China are backordered for months. Free inventory is virtually zero. Install times for new systems can now stretch out as long as six months in some cities.
If you want an off-grid solar system and you’re not already in the queue to get one, there’s very little chance you can have one in place before the prophecy date of December 21, 2012… if that even matters to you. I personally don’t put any special weight on that date, but I do believe our world is becoming increasingly unpredictable. Those who want to be safe, prepared and living with a source of electricity need to take steps now to install off-grid systems.
Don’t rely on solar installation companies to know what you want. In most cities, they automatically assume customers just want “grid-tie” systems to reduce their electric bills. So if you don’t insist on it, you’ll end up buying a grid-tie system that becomes a useless heap of dead electronics on the day the power grid dies.
Additional notes: Yes, even off-grid systems are vulnerable to solar flares and EMP attacks (dir/Technology/Solar-Panels-Sunlight-Energy.jpg). There’s no protecting fragile electronics from such events unless you keep a spare set of redundant equipment protected inside Faraday cages or wrapped in aluminum foil and stored inside galvanized aluminum trash cans. Even then, you’d have to figure out how to reinstall everything from the ground up, which would require an expert electrician.

Olive Garden restaurants treat their workers like crap, says restaurant guide

by J. D. Heyes

(NaturalNews) If you’re like most Americans, you enjoy a meal out once in a while (and not to lecture, but based on the serving sizes restaurants heap on plates, it should be only once in a while). But did you know this 620 billion-dollar-a-year industry offers workers some of the lowest wages and benefits packages, paying workers as little as $2.13 an hour?
According to Restaurant Opportunities Centers (ROC) United , an advocacy group seeking to raise awareness about the low pay and poor economic conditions offered to food service industry workers, in the land of the free, plenty of restaurant employees are often treated little better than medieval serfs.
“We all enjoy eating out,” says ROC United, which has published a “Diner’s Guide” to help restaurant-goers find out where to “eat responsibly.”
“Unfortunately, the workers who cook, prepare, and serve our food suffer from poverty wages, no benefits like paid sick days, and little or no chance to move up to better positions. When the people who serve us food can’t afford to pay the rent or take a day off when they’re sick, our dining experience suffers,” the group says on its Web site.
The aim of the group is to highlight inequities within restaurant chains towards their employees. Some of ROC United’s findings are shocking, to say the least. The group sets minimum standards in its guide but a number of chains fail to even meet them.

Problems like discrimination and ‘wage theft’ abound

The guide delineates between eateries that belong to the ROC’s “High Road” Restaurant Roundtable program, which brings workers together “to promote the high road to profitability” in the industry, and lesser establishments. In doing so, ROC scores restaurants and chains in four categories: the minimum wage for tipped workers, the minimum wage for non-tipped workers, whether or not workers get paid sick days, and whether the company offers opportunities for advancement.
Singled out for special contempt is the Darden restaurant group, which owns the Red Lobster, Capital Grille, Olive Garden, and Longhorn Steakhouse chains. A number of employees from the chain have sought assistance from ROC over cases involving discriminatory practices and “wage theft,” the latter a system whereby “restaurants deny pay to employees through practices like working off the clock, including asking servers and other employees to do ‘side work’ like rolling silverware, filling salt and pepper shakers and other custodial duties without clocking in, or assigning tipped employees non-tipped tasks without changing their pay rate for those hours,” says this report.
In response, the ROC organization has created a Web site called Dignity at Darden, which encourages visitors to sign an electronic petition that essentially asks Darden management to treat employees better.
The site claims that Darden has fired black servers “because they did not fit the company standard” at their Capital Grille fine dining restaurant in Chevy Chase, Md.,” prevents minority and immigrant employees “from accessing living wage positions, such as server and bartender, at their Capital Grille fine dining restaurant,” and makes workers perform “off the clock.”

No livable wage, despite the hard work

The problem is Darden’s clout. In the recent controversy over minimum wage laws in New York state, lawmakers were deluged by lobbyists from the food service industry. But Darden didn’t join the group; Darden had its own set of lobbyists. The goal was to ensure its restaurants were not subjected to the same wage laws as other businesses.
“The food service industry makes up one of the largest private sector work forces, second only to retail. They’re predicting over $620 billion in revenues this year, and yet, restaurant jobs make up seven of the ten lowest paid jobs in the country,” ROC Communications Coordinator Meghana Reddy told Raw Story recently.
“People don’t understand and respect the intensity, physically and emotionally, of working in a restaurant, particularly at peak hours,” she said.
Most other restaurants on the ROC guide didn’t fare well either. Starbucks, McDonald’s, Arby’s, Hooters, Denny’s and scores of others only paid their tipped employees an average of $2.13 an hour and virtually no benefits, which include paid sick time or health insurance.

Discover the gateway to remarkable health with a diet rich in color

by Carolanne Wright

(NaturalNews) Consuming a diet rich in naturally colorful foods not only is beautiful but encourages ultimate health balance. Enjoying a variety of each color group provides a powerful defense against disease and environmental stressors. Scientific research has confirmed the importance of consuming a broad spectrum of fruits and vegetables to protect and enhance physical well being.

The power of a colorfully diverse diet

The color in fruits and vegetables contain an astonishing 25,000 bioactive chemicals that are found to be beneficial for optimum health. Phytochemicals are compounds that help to protect plants from various dangers such as UV rays and damaging pests. These same compounds are the very elements that help to protect us too.
However, it is not enough to simply eat the 5-9 recommended servings per day. Consuming a veritable rainbow is the key to unlocking true robust radiance. Consider the modern diet compared with our hunter-gatherer ancestors who ate over 800 varieties of fruits and vegetables. Take for example sweet peas. There are 150 known types, but only a few available to the average consumer. To preserve health, it is especially important to encourage a diet that includes a wide assortment of different colors and varieties of fruits and vegetables.

Enjoy a wealth of color and health

To effortlessly take advantage of natures health enhancing bounty, focus on a varied diet selected from the seven vibrant food color groups. To receive the maximum benefit, consume only high-quality, locally grown, and organic produce.
Red/Purple
These foods are packed with anthocyanins, powerful antioxidants that help to protect against cellular aging, Alzheimers, and heart disease. Examples include red wine, strawberries, tomatoes, red apples, prunes, blueberries, purple grapes, eggplants and beets.
Green
Green foods help to protect against cancer by inhibiting carcinogens with indoles, isocyanate, and sulforaphane. Kale, brussels sprouts, cabbage and broccoli are a few excellent sources.
White/Green
The active component allicin, found in the onion/garlic family, demonstrates anti-tumor activity. The flavonoid antioxidants quercetin and kaempferol are found in white/green foods such as pears, endive, celery and white wine.
Yellow/Green
This color provides substantial amounts of the carotenoids lutein and zeaxanthin which protect the eyes. Both compounds lower the risk of age-related macular degeneration and cataracts. As an added bonus, lutein also protects against atherosclerosis. Enjoy foods such as mustard greens, arugula, collards, spinach, honeydew melon, yellow corn and avocado.
Orange
Orange foods contain beta and alpha carotene, which assist in repairing damaged DNA and protect against cancer. Good sources are carrots, acorn squash, apricots, mangos and sweet potatoes.
Orange/Yellow
Foods of these variety help to prevent heart disease through the compound beta cryptothanxin. Orange/yellow foods are also high in vitamin C which provides abundant health protecting benefits. Also, the skin of an orange contains high amounts of a protective fat that has been shown to annihilate cancer cells in humans. Focus on foods such as tangerines, peaches, papayas, oranges and pineapple.

Gattaca becomes reality as scientists start to screen, abort human babies based on 3,500 ‘genetic faults’

by Ethan A. Huff, staff writer

(NaturalNews) The popular 1997 science fiction film Gattaca portrays a futuristic world in which human beings genetically engineered (GE) with certain desirable and superior genetic traits are given preference to natural-born human beings who are considered inferior. And in just 15 years since the release of the film, this scenario has become a reality, as modern science has come up with a new way to test unborn babies for roughly 3,500 so-called genetic “defects.”

The U.K.’s Telegraph reports that a team of researchers from the University of Washington (UW) in Seattle has contrived a method of examining the genetic code of unborn babies via blood samples taken from their mothers, and saliva samples taken from their fathers. The tiny amounts of free-floating DNA present in both samples allow researchers to essentially map the entire genetic code of unborn babies and determine which genetic traits they will have upon birth.

Some babies are born naturally with “de novo” mutations, which are said to be linked to genetic defects such as Down syndrome and cystic fibrosis. These mutations are typically not passed down from parents to their children, and are instead acquired in some other way, including potentially through vaccinations and toxic environmental exposures.

In 39 out of 44 tested cases, the UW researchers were able to accurately pinpoint prior to birth de novo mutations that would occur in babies after birth. And as the technology becomes widely available to parents in the near future, the ghastly scenario depicted in the movie Gattaca will evolve into an ever-present reality where the only unborn babies permitted to live and thrive will be those with “superior” genetic makeups.

“This work opens up the possibility that we will be able to scan the whole genome of the fetus for more than 3,000 single-gene disorders through a single, non-invasive test,” said Dr. Jay Shendure, lead scientist for the research published in the journal . His entire team, however, corporately added that “incorporating this level of information into prenatal decision-making raises many ethical questions that must be considered carefully within the scientific community and on a societal level.”

Genetic screening will lead to more abortions, more eugenics, and a culture of genetic class suppression

When science starts openly tampering with human life based on subjective perceptions of which genetic traits are desirable and which are not desirable, there is no stopping the pandora’s box of population control techniques that will surely ensue. Parents seeking the “perfect” child, for instance, will be more likely to simply abort a child with genetic “errors” and keep trying until they get the one they want.

As government-run healthcare emerges into full reality, state-controlled doctors may begin telling parents that they are not allowed to have an imperfect child because treating that child’s inevitable genetic conditions will cost the state too much money. Forced abortions, in other words, could become the norm if genetic testing techniques like the ones developed at UW become widespread.

And ultimately, the breeding of genetically “superior” children will more than likely lead to a genetically superior class of humans that looks down on those with inferior genetic traits. This is exactly what occurred in the movie Gattaca, as “inferior” humans with natural imperfections were denied jobs and treated like second-class citizens.

Instead, researchers should be looking for ways to eliminate the thousands of untested chemicals that are added to the food supply (http://www.naturalnews.com/035680_food_packaging_chemicals_PFOA.html), remove toxic fluoride chemicals from water supplies (http://www.fluoridealert.org/downs-syndrome.htm), and end the administration of gene-tampering vaccines to young children (http://www.naturalnews.com/033062_Rupert_Murdoch_Andrew_Wakefield.html).

These human interventions have been shown to be directly responsible for causing genetic defects in humans, and are just a few of the many causes of de novo mutations. If unborn babies were not exposed to chemicals like bisphenol A, herbicides like glyphosate (Roundup), genetically-modified (GM) organisms, and chemical vaccine adjuvants like Thimerosal (mercury) and aluminum, many of them would not even develop genetic defects in the first place.

Recent research has proven that genetic damage caused by chemical exposure can pass from generation to generation through a process known as epigenetics, even when subsequent generations are not directly exposed to those chemicals (http://www.naturalnews.com). This means that man-made toxins such as those sprayed on conventional food crops, added to processed foods, laced in the water supply, and applied to furniture and other consumer products are a blatant scourge on the human genome.

But science would rather ignore the obvious, and instead design technologies that will allow the system to filter out genetic “undesirables” after they have been conceived. What Hitler and other deranged tyrants of the past tried to accomplish violently is now becoming possible genetically with “scientific advancement” as its cover.

100 percent false labeling – and it’s legal!

by Craig Stellpflug

(NaturalNews) In yet another wave of “truth in advertising” lawsuits, embattled Tropicana is now fending off approximately 20 lawsuits at once because of blatant truth-slanting labeling that misleads consumers to think that they are buying fresh, unadulterated, good-for-you OJ. The FDA oversees packaged food labeling and has no definition of what is “natural.” As long as a food labeled “natural” doesn’t contain added color, artificial flavor or synthetic substances, the FDA doesn’t care. But the consumers do!

Tropicana markets its orange juice as “fresh from the grove” and calls its product “great-tasting 100 percent orange juice,” all the while claiming that it has fully complied with labeling laws. Can this be true when Tropicana’s heavily processed, aseptic, oxygen deprived, tank-stored juice adds chemically engineered flavor packs – ethylbutyrate to the sluice of juice? If they didn’t add ethylbutyrate to the juice it would taste flat and no one would buy it. I guess if they put toxic ethylbutyrate added to improve devitalized flavor no one would buy that either.

“It’s not simply orange, it’s complicated orange,” says Alissa Hamilton, author of “Squeezed: What You Don’t Know About Orange Juice.”

New wave of consumer lawsuits

These Tropicana lawsuits are just the latest to be filed in a new wave of lawsuits over “all natural” label claims. Recently, a number of national brands have been sued over deceptive labeling. Coca Cola, Snapple, Tostitos, SunChips, and Ben & Jerry’s ice cream, to name a few, have found themselves on the defendant side of the law. Greedy companies looking to milk the cash-cow on consumer driven natural products are labeling everything they can “all natural” even when the products are just plain old junk food. Some companies like 7UP and Capri Sun have wised up to change their labels back from the lies.

If a product does not naturally occur in nature or has to be chemically processed, it is NOT natural and cannot be called all natural even by a major stretch of the imagination. But Big Grocery companies are arguing that chemically processed high fructose corn syrup should be allowed on the All Natural label. A New York judge backed Big Grocery to rule in favor of Snapple’s grab at labeling high fructose corn syrup “all natural”. Snapple however, eventually chose to distance itself from the high fructose corn syrup bailiwick by removing it from their All Natural products anyhow.

How the market is changing… again

The only thing Big Grocery companies pay attention to is Big Money. When facing multimillion dollar lawsuits and embarrassing consumer settlements, companies change, albeit slowly. This year already, Ben & Jerry’s and Breyers ice cream settled lawsuits for $7.5 million, changing packaging labels and providing customers who bought mislabeled flavors like “Chubby Hubby” and “Chunky Monkey” cash rebates.

How the market is NOT changing

In seeking truth in labeling for processed free glutamic acid (MSG), the Truth in Labeling Campaign found out how obstinate the FDA can be in protecting Big Grocery interests. Their first project was launched to identify whenever and wherever MSG occurs in processed food. The Truth in Labeling Campaign joined with physicians, researchers, parents and an ever-growing number of volunteers to file a Citizen Petition with the FDA asking the FDA to require labeling of all MSG found in processed foods. After snubbing the Citizen Petition, the FDA used procedural trickery to get the lawsuit set aside and also to “protect” sensitive evidence contained in its own files that document the fact that MSG has toxic potential.

The best solution

The best solution, even better than expensive lawsuits and other maneuvers, is to get the Big Grocery companies where it really counts. Stop buying their deceptive products. Stick with organic foods as-much-as-possible (which are healthier for you anyhow) and avoid all processed foods. It’s really not even about the money; it’s about your health.

Effective alternative treatments for Lyme disease and protection from tick bites

by JB Bardot

(NaturalNews) Lyme disease is the most common tick-borne infectious disease in the US. It’s transmitted to humans spending time in woodsy areas and from ticks on dogs. The Borrelia burgdorferi bacteria causes Lyme disease and arthritis, manifesting in a multitude of symptoms ranging from rheumatoid arthritis, to fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, neurological states, Bell’s palsey, meningitis, heart and lung symptoms. Untreated, Lyme becomes deeply entrenched in the body, developing into an auto-immune disease.

No tests can confirm Lyme disease; rather, a diagnosis is made from the constellation of symptoms. Antibiotic therapy is the conventional treatment; often suppressing symptoms, driving them deep into the tissue, to surface years later in a wide range of troubling diseases.

This article is a is a brief overview of several of the many effective alternative medicines known to prevent and treat Lyme disease.

Prevention

If you have a dog and live in a tick-infested area, treat your yard early in the season with diatomaceous earth. Spray bushes with a mixture of natural pyrethrins, garlic and dish soap. These substances destroy ticks and lessen your chances of being bitten in your own yard.

Take colloidal silver for three to five days before spending time out doors during tick season. Colloidal silver is anti-microbial and kills a wide range of bacteria, acting like a natural antibiotic.

The homeopathic nosode made from B. burgdorferi may prevent the onset of Lyme disease after being bitten, as well as helping to cure it in its later stages.

Early exposure

If you you’ve been bitten by a tick, start taking colloidal silver immediately. Additionally, other natural antibiotics such as Pau d’arco tea, garlic and Echinacea extract may prevent the onset of infection.

The homeopathic remedy Ledum treats puncture wounds from venomous insect bites. It should be taken right away after being bitten together with colloidal silver.

If you’ve developed flu-like symptoms in the early stages of lyme disease, the homeopathic remedy Gelsemium should provide relief. It relieves fever, headache, body aches and pain, stiff neck, muscle pains, weakness, and a sensation of heaviness.

Neurological symptoms

Within weeks to months, Lyme disease may progress into neurological symptoms such as Bell’s palsy, meningitis, paralysis in the limbs and poor motor coordination. Heart and breathing problems might develop. Homeopathic remedies that may relieve neurological symptoms are Causticum, Tellurium and Sepia. Additionally, the herb Cordyseps improves stamina, increases energy, reduces weakness and fatigue, and increases lung function, relieving breathing difficulties.

Various neurological conditions mimicking serious diseases such as MS, ALS, and Parkinson’s may develop in later stages of Lyme disease. The Peruvian herb Samento, or Cat’s claw, has been shown to be highly effective for treating neurological disorders. Samento corrects immune dysfunction, blocks the action of certain neurotoxins, and has an anti-microbial action on the B. burgdorferi spirochetes.

Lyme disease and arthritis

The most common symptoms of Lyme disease are rheumatoid arthritis and other musculoskeletal pain and arthritis disease that linger for years. Homeopathic Rhus toxicodendron is the main remedy, especially in long-standing cases where there is suppression from antibiotics. The arthritis or fibromyalgia pain is usually worse on the left side and on first movement. Painful areas get better with continued motion of the affected part. There is stiffness and soreness which is better with warm applications.

Other homeopathic remedies that may offer relief for lyme arthritis are Kalmia latifolia, Pulsatilla, Lachesis, Lycopodium, Ruta graveolens and Phosphorus.

Don’t self-treat with Lyme disease and arthritis. Consult a natural healthcare practitioner or an integrative treatment center for care.

‘Vitamin D Guide’ infographic explains importance of vitamin D for optimal health

by Ethan A. Huff, staff writer

(NaturalNews) The vital importance of getting plenty of vitamin D as part of a healthy lifestyle cannot be overstated, and a newly released NaturalNews infographic explains some of the many reasons why vitamin D is crucial to health, as well as how much of it you should be getting.

You can view the infographic here:
http://www.naturalnews.com/Infographic-The-Vitamin-D-Guide.html

Vitamin D can prevent practically every disease known to man

A prohormone, vitamin D is a crucial component of proper development, growth and maintenance of the human body. Without it, the body is prone to develop practically every disease in existence, as vitamin D’s metabolic product, 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D (calcitriol), is responsible for unlocking more than 2,700 binding sites on the human genome (http://www.vitamindcouncil.org/about-vitamin-d/what-is-vitamin-d/).

Vitamin D deficiency, in other words, can lead to high blood pressure, osteoporosis, rickets, depression, diabetes, heart disease, kidney disease, influenza, obesity, hair loss, and cancer. NaturalNews has covered many of the studies over the years that show this to be true, but now this information is available all in one place on the infographic.

Government guidelines for vitamin D are too low

Did you know that the federal government’s guidelines for vitamin D intake are far lower than what you really need to stay healthy? The daily dosage of 600 international units (IU) of vitamin D that the government says is adequate for children and adults under the age of 70 is a mere 15 percent of the 4,000 IU daily recommendation given by many nutritionists.

While 600 IU may prevent you from getting rickets, it is not nearly enough to prevent the host of illnesses that are on the rise in modern society today. In fact, the government’s recommendations are so low that government advisory boards in recent years have proposed increasing the recommended intake guidelines for vitamin D.

Vitamin D more effective than flu shot at preventing flu

The Vitamin D Guide infographic also points out that vitamin D has been shown to be far more effective than the flu shot at preventing influenza. While a mere one out of every 100 people that take the flu shot are said to avoid the flu as a result, every person that maintains optimal blood levels of vitamin D should be able to avoid the flu.

Be sure to check out the Vitamin D Guide infographic here:
http://www.naturalnews.com/Infographic-The-Vitamin-D-Guide.html

Natural sunlight exposure, vitamin D3 best ways to get vitamin D

The best way for humans to get vitamin D is to regularly expose their skin to natural sunlight. Individuals with fairer skin tones need about 15 minutes of daily sun exposure during the summer months to produce adequate levels of vitamin D in the body. Those with darker skin, depending on the shade, will need as much as an hour and a half of daily sunlight exposure.

During the winter months, it is much more difficult to get enough sunlight exposure, which is why supplementing with vitamin D3 may be necessary. You can also obtain minimal amounts of vitamin D from salmon, sardines, mackerel, shrimp, cod, eggs, fortified cow’s milk and fortified yogurt. Raw milk is also said to have high levels of naturally occurring vitamin D.
